ESSAY-A-DAY

I find when I paint, I am thinking in parallel about painting itself. So, I thought I might write in parallel about painting or about the painting itself. I have come to think this is too heroic a task, up to which, I may not be able. I have written much (off line) about the act of creating. I taught a course in this at Columbia University in the late 1980's. It is my thought to post portions of the course notes on this site as part of the ESSAY-A-DAY. Be prepared. I may fail.

There are many steps before a painting. The obvious is to select a subject --- if a still life, it is to organize and compose, select a "point-of-view."
